You just woke up.
Shit.
You’re in prison.
You glance around in confusion, and then a wave of relief hits.
Your cell door is wide open.
Moving closer to peer out, the terror floods back in as you see a swarm of inmates approaching through the narrow corridor.
You shrink back into your cell as you watch the horde mechanically march by.
Not a single one seems to notice you or even glances in your direction.
Instinctively, you join the herd.
But something feels really off.
As if waking up in confinement wasn’t odd enough, you feel inexplicably uncomfortable.
You’re a stranger in a strange land…an alien who landed on a distant, dystopian planet.
Looking around, emotionless faces abound with each one housing sets of sunken, lifeless eyes.
Necks are tilted down atop slumped shoulders.
It must be chow time.
So you sit like the others and eat the gruel; as drab and monotonous as the vacuous vessels consuming it.
Glancing around you notice the strangest thing…
No guards.
Soonafter, the captives collectively trudge back to their cells.
You do the same.
It seems as if no time has passed when you hear them returning.
As if being led by an invisible force, the herd thuds back. They pass your still-open cell door and, once again, don’t bother to look in.
You follow unconsciously, and find yourself out in the yard.
It appears to be rec time, but no one seems to be recreating.
It feels busy as the crowd paces around and around, as if following an imaginary wheel with no beginning and no end.
There’s listless commotion, like bees buzzing in anticipation of instructions from their unseen queen.
You look around in every direction.
Still no guards.
Even stranger, there’s nothing confining the inmates. There are a few short fences, but no barbed wire and no gates at the exits.
You shake your head in confusion and think, “Where the hell am I? What sort of prison is this and how did I get here?”
You watch in awe as the zombie-like prisoners plod back to their cells.
The worries about where you are and how you got here fade, as a more apropos question pops into your mind…
“WHY THE HELL WOULD I STAY?”
So, this time, you decide to go in the opposite direction of the disheartened drones.
After all, there are no guards.
Nearing the main exit that leads toward the free world, there’s still a faint feeling of fear.
You worry that you might be jolted back into confinement by an invisible electric fence or some sort of futuristic force field.
But you know you have to try. Going back to your cell and back to sleep is simply not an option.
As you inch closer the the exit, the apprehension amplifies.
You cautiously look around in all directions. No one seems to notice or care.
No one is even there.
So you walk straight out the main entrance…the gateless gate…and nothing stops you.
In a deluge of elation, you can’t help but let out a bellowing laugh that echoes throughout the dungeonous halls you left behind.
You know that this celebration of liberation will most likely fall on the deaf ears of the sleeping inmates inside, yet remain hopeful that it may shake at least one of those subjugated subjects awake.
Feelings of joy and confusion collide, and all you can muster is this:
“Am I crazy…or is everyone else?”
With that, you take a deep breath, smile, and stroll off into the endless expanse of your emancipation.
And, just like that, you are free.
