Why the fuck would we color within the lines?
Have you ever questioned what we’re taught...and why?
Here’s a true story.
It was the first day of kindergarten for my wife, Alisa.
The teacher asked everyone to draw a picture of themselves.
Filled with enthusiasm, she joyfully scribbled away.
She used colors freely, her hair was a playful mess, and her body was bubbly and fun.
Then, at the end of the school year, they asked her to do it again.
After just ten months of indoctrination, she was a different person.
Clearly, from her black-and-white depiction of herself; clean-cut, neat, and orderly…a lot had changed in her from the carefree, bubbly, character she used to play.
What’s worse, she was actually proud of her second drawing.
The first one she did for joy, the second for approval.
And just like that…the color, creativity, and curiosity of childhood were gone.
Kindergarten was a success, according to them…she was officially ready for the first grade.
Luckily, for her, me, and the entire world, their tentacles didn’t stay stuck in her forever.
The color would rush back and she’d be fun and carefree again…after the wisdom that would come - not from learning - but from unlearning.
Teaching to color between the lines doesn’t cultivate creativity. It creates conformists who learn to robotically take direction without question…programmed to feed on the approval of others.
Are you ready to be wild and carefree again?
Are you ready to start drawing outside the lines?
If you’re ready…what are you waiting for?
