When I worked in an office building in Queens, New York, the very best part of my day — for years — was my lunchtime walk.
I'd spend about fifteen minutes walking to a sprawling park and then proceed to get lost in nature for the next hour.
I always knew there was more to life than commutes, cubicles, and confinement...
And there was.
There was an enchanted and expansive world teeming with birds and trees, clouds and bees, rocks to be tossed, and worries to be lost.
This world didn't exist in my head. It was real. I was desperate to be a part of it.
But nothing changed for years.
After all, nothing ever changes for the better until we do.
Now, over a decade later, I witness miracles every day: Hawks gliding on the wind currents, waves crashing against a sandy shore, fiery sunsets over the horizon, fireflies, wild parrots, howler monkeys, majestic mountain peaks, roaring rivers, babbling brooks, and on and on and on. It would take a lifetime to describe it all...and even then, words could never do it justice.
Life…REAL life...is all around.
I felt it back then but I live it now.
It's not some dream for retirement or a temporary utopia where I get to spend one or two weeks of vacation — aka "vacating" my life — to experience.
It feels natural because it's nature. It's what we are at our core.
So don't let a stifling life keep you in the dark. USE IT to remind yourself there's more light in this life, and not everyone lives like you do — despite what it seems like when you look around your office, subway, or current traffic jam.
Trade your meetings for mountains, swap squares for squiggles, and change the mundane for the miraculous.
Oftentimes, getting lost is the only way to be found.
Earth's crammed with heaven. Don't wait to die to discover it.
