The theme for my writing this month is: Advice for a younger me.
Below is a darker poem, for sure (you can listen here on Substack, read the poem below, or follow along with captions on YouTube).
It’s important for me to acknowledge that the path of enlightenment isn’t always light. As with all things, life is a delicate balance of yin and yang.
When we don’t express the darker side of things, that’s when they get repressed and are able to cause far more damage.
I THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. If you ever have dark thoughts, please don’t keep them to yourself. And if they get really dark, remember that there is always help. You can find help near you at findahelpline.com.

At times when I feel like a burden,
Like things would be better without me here,
I must remember that I’ve forgotten something.
My vision may be clouded but it’s perfectly clear.
If I wasn’t supposed to be alive,
I would never have been born.
The universe is perfect,
As is the rose AND the thorn.
I’m feeling this down,
But thorns have their place,
Though they’re sharp and they slice,
They also protect the rose with grace.
You see, misery arises when I feel,
I’m only the thorn and lose sight,
That the thorn plays a part—but it’s just a part.
Without darkness there could be no light…
Without pain there’s no pleasure,
Without sharp there’s no dull.
Without hell there’s no heaven,
Without heart I’m just skull.
The agony is real,
But it makes me feel.
And when I can feel,
It means I can heal.
So when I’m wearing the frown,
I try not to be it.
Things turn around,
As soon as I see it.
I notice the pain,
And though it cuts like a knife,
It tells me: YOU’RE ALIVE!
And you are so worthy of life.
No Thorn, No Rose
