Why I quit my airline job to travel
A riddle to help your mind unravel,
A riddle to help your mind unfurl:
Why did I have to quit my airline job to travel?
Why quit an airline job…to travel the world?
You may not know this about me, but I worked a corporate job, a desk job, for TEN YEARS. Even thinking about that is cringeworthy to me now (if this offends you, read on)…
I learned a lot and made friends that I still keep in touch with today, however, one of the greatest things I learned was that no matter how awesome the company (JetBlue), how amazing the perks (free flights, free hotels, free cruises…plus the standard 401k, great salary, etc.), or how a job may seem like the dream from the outside, there’s one catch…
You are still expected to show up nearly EVERY day, for the entire day, and then enjoy the “free time” on your off days…on your “vacation” (think about what that word actually means for a moment).
I learned how unfulfilling a GREAT job could be…and knew corporate life wasn’t for me.
Thankfully, my wife was not treated as well at her job (you can re-read that because it’s not a typo)…she brought up the idea to quit our jobs, sell our possessions, and move to the Caribbean.
What a blessing!
Since then we have lived in or traveled to St. John (USVI), Hawaii, Fiji, Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Greece, Italy, France, Breckenridge, Costa Rica, and now…Aruba.
Life is too short. The trade off is not worth it.
Just my opinion…but it’s clearly a riddle for those in the thick of it (and don’t think you’re ever irreplaceable, as another “lucky” occurrence was working at JetBlue as the Founder/CEO…the man who created the company and also hired me as their first intern…was fired by the board of directors overnight).
